This Czech drama focuses on a young couple and their three kids - the elder two adopted gypsies, one dark-skinned; the youngest a severe asthmatic - as they toil to adapt to small town life, a new school, petty racism and the schoolboy urge to rebellion. Hardly original, it struggles to convey the boys' more elaborate flights of fancy, but the film is warmly, if conventionally empathetic. Insofar as you get to know these characters, you wish them well.Author: NB
