Can't Stop the Music (1980)
Director: Nancy Walker
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
The big joke in this disco-musical is having gay butch stereotypes of both sexes carry on as if they were straight. Six dopey members of the Village People, all with bursting flies, fall for Valerie Perrine (who has a just-platonic relationship with her male room-mate), while the Lesbian advertising agent swoons into the arms of a man. It follows that most of the dialogue is gay in-jokes, with the odd music biz joke for variety. A wretchedly sub-standard score from Jacques Morali and production numbers of exceptional tackiness round things off. Oh, and yes, there is fun in the showers in the 'YMCA' number.Author: TR
