The Carey Treatment (1972)
Director: Blake Edwards
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A bizarre predecessor to Coma (in fact based on a pseudonymous novel by Michael Crichton), this hospital thriller sees pathologist Coburn attempting to unravel deaths occurring in connection with abortions and drug pilfering. Oddly balanced between straightforward thriller and semi-parody (towards the end, the body count rises ridiculously), and structured around a nicely complex plot, it nevertheless never examines any of the issues it toys with, and is saddled with incredibly shallow characterisations (O'Neill especially). But for all its faults, at least it's better than the mess of most of Edwards' later efforts.Author: GA
