The Contact (1997)
Director: Chang Youn-Hyun
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
In the late '80s, fresh out of film school in Hungary, Chang led the underground film group Changsan-gotmae away from protests against military government and into Stalinist agit-prop about labour unions. Seven years later this solo debut, a half-arsed romance derived from the Japanese film Haru, was a huge commercial hit. Radio producer Dong-Hyun (Han) can't get over an ex-girlfriend and retreats into his own closed world. Home-shopping channel voice Soo-Hyun (Chun) has a crush on her best friend's boyfriend. Brought together by The Velvet Underground's 'Pale Blue Eyes', Dong-Hyun and Soo-Hyun meet in a web chat-room and draw each other out of their shells. But will they dare to meet face to face before he emigrates to Australia? No doubt it's all a searing comment on emotional alienation under capitalism.Author: TR
