Far from Lewis' best, this chase thriller is nevertheless an engagingly taut affair, its various visual flourishes climaxing in a characteristically atmospheric swamp shoot-out (one of several in his work). Gassman is the escaped con who, for none too clear reasons, heads back home to his beloved Louisiana bayous, Sullivan the pursuing lawman with whom he shares a strange bond.
