The Garden (1995)
Director: Martin Sulik
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
There are a few amusing moments (notably the drunken reunion between the teacher hero and his generally hostile father) in this offbeat tale of spiritual renewal, but most of the time it's too oblique, allegorical and, perhaps, tinged with misogyny for its own good. Jakub, asked to leave his tailor dad's flat, goes to live in and tidy up his late grandfather's rundown rural cottage and garden; while there, he meets saintly and philosophical types, not to mention a teenage girl ('The Virgin Miraculous') whose mother beats her. Sadly, the film never lives up to its 14 intriguing chapter headings.Author: GA
