Godzilla vs the Bionic Monster (1974)
Director: Jun Fukuda
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A patchy romp in which villainous spacemen (apes at heart) plan to devastate Earth using Mechagodzilla, a fearsome bionic ogre disguised to look like the real champ. After a breathless intro during which a royal geisha has visions of the impending disaster, a spooky cave is unearthed, pieces of 'space titanium' are found, and Mechagodzilla makes mincemeat of one of our hero's mates (a sort of inflated, leaping hedgehog), the film becomes bogged down in a clutter of subplots, characters and technicalities. Things begin to pick up in the final epic confrontation between the two Godzillas and war god Ghinrah, who is woken up from his million year kip to lend a hand. Death rays zigzag and mouths belch fire with cartoon gusto, through overall the special effects are disappointing.Author: IB
