Anyone who enjoyed Car Wash should be warned that Schultz admits only to having done a wrap-up 'fireman's job' on this woeful biopic featuring a smiling Pryor as Wendell Scott, the first black US stock car driver. Although Melvin Van Peebles evidently directed most of it, a doubt still remains as to who should be held finally responsible for the finished cornball mish-mash, since Schultz's subsequent film (Which Way Is Up?) bears an ominous resemblance to the style and tone of this relentlessly indulgent comedy-romance.Author: JPy
