From Time Out Film Guide

A chaotic affair which eschews narrative coherence for rapid-fire sight gags and self-referential silliness. The risibly slender plot finds Billy (Galligan) and prissy girlfriend Kate (Cates) in the employ of the Clamp Organisation, into whose money-grubbing hands falls the newly-orphaned mogwai ('Gizmo' to his friends). Narrowly evading dissection by ever-so-slightly fiendish Dr Catheter (Lee), Gizmo is reunited with Billy, who hardly has time to say 'don't get them wet or feed them after midnight' before his moistened pet gives birth to a skyscraper full of late-night feasting beasties. Thereafter, film-inspired pandemonium reigns. Gizmo, his head full of Rambo, 'becomes war', gribblies wave dentists' drills about their ears and chatter 'Is it safe?', and the whole diminutive cast dons spangled dresses and top hats for a Busby Berkeley-style chorus of 'New York, New York'. There's almost enough in-joke ingenuity to justify the total absence of plot.
