Pillow Talk (1959)
Director: Michael Gordon
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Long disparaged as a reactionary, prudish symbol of virginal womanhood, Doris Day was hopefully reclaimed by certain British feminist film critics as a woman who chose to say no to the manipulations of Don Juans. A fair point, but did she have to be quite so clean and wholesome, verging on the stereotype of the 'good girl'? At any rate, this, the first of her romantic comedies with Rock Hudson - chaste Doris shares a party line with philandering Rock and with predictable results - is frothily enjoyable, although in comparison with (say) the battle-of-the-sexes comedies of Hawks, it often seems complacent and shallow.Author: GA
