Plaza Suite (1970)
Director: Arthur Hiller
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Harmless piece of Neil Simon fluff, rather flattened by Hiller's steamroller direction: three playlets, set in the same hotel room, with the gimmick that all three male leads are played by Matthau. The first is the best, with Matthau beautifully partnered by Maureen Stapleton as a couple celebrating their 24th wedding anniversary, she waxing all nostalgic, he itching to get away to his mistress, and a history of marital irritation charted by their absurdist dialogue. The rest is thumb-twiddling time, with Matthau as a Hollywood producer seducing a happily married old flame (the delightful Harris, wasted)) with his big-time act, and as the father of a hysterical bride (Sullivan) who has locked herself in the loo with the wedding waiting.Author: TM
