Pride and Prejudice (1940)
Director: Robert Z Leonard
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
An adaptation of the Helen Jerome play based on Jane Austen's novel, which may well make Austenites quiver at its infidelities and occasional insensitivities (not to mention the perhaps inevitable blurring of the subtler social ironies), but is surprisingly dry and droll. Aldous Huxley's contribution to the script undoubtedly helped, but it is the cast which carries it: marvellous performances all round, with Garson's cool prejudice perfectly matched against Olivier's chill pride, and only minor reservations (Mary Boland's Mrs Bennett is a little too tiresomely tiresome).Author: TM
