Lucy Hendon Crockett's turbulent novel of WWII romance, The Magnificent Bastards, underwent a title change on its way to the screen, though the producers almost settled for The Magnificent Devils before ending up with this one. Nurse Kerr is a widow who tangles emotionally with colonel Holden while on a mission to visit the place where her husband died, but her ensuing pregnancy and his invalid wife complicate matters. The ghost of From Here to Eternity is never far away, but in this instance the credibility factor is a good deal lower.Author: TJ
