Harold Pinter penned one of his superior scripts in this fastidious adaptation of Penelope Mortimer's novel about a compulsive child-bearer and her unfaithful screenwriter husband. The influence of European cinema (in particular Antonioni) is evident in the delineation of despair among the middle classes, and there is something peculiarly self-parodic in the heroine enduring a nervous breakdown in Harrods. Fine performances notwithstanding, the world of the Hampstead soap opera now seems so far away as to almost rate as science fiction.Author: DT

- Posted on Jan 05 2009 17:09 I was very moved by the movie. A person who has to think that the have to keep it altogether is sad because they feel everyone depends on them. When you have a person who has to be a perfectionist(in the mind), you think that you are carrying everything on your shoulders. Inn reality, being transparent will bring you closer to those around you. Excellent,well written script. I will never forget this movie.
