Harper (1966)
Director: Jack Smight
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Newman plays Ross MacDonald's private eye Lew Harper, a role he was to repeat for Stuart Rosenberg in 1975's The Drowning Pool. William Goldman, in his first solo script credit, plays knowing games with the Chandlerish conventions, while director Smight pumps up the pace and tags along with the allusive casting of Bacall. Enjoyable performances throughout. Just the same, a very minor Big Sleep.Author: PT
