Haut les Coeurs (1999)
Director: Sólveig Anspach
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Forget the English titles. This first feature concerns a young woman expecting her first child, who learns that she also has breast cancer. The initial prognosis demands an abortion, but she wants her child and refuses to hear it. Specialist advice reveals a risky but worthwhile strategy, using chemotherapy to control the tumour long enough for her to give birth, then a mastectomy right after the delivery. Yes, this is a tough movie, but the central performance from Karin Viard - resolute, vulnerable, human - is one of the best you will see anywhere this year. Viard's battle for her baby and for herself reminds us that life is absolutely worth fighting for. Full stop. How many so-called 'feelgood' movies mean this much?Author: TJ
