Hedd Wyn (1992)
Director: Paul Turner
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Subtitled 'The Armageddon Poet', this Welsh-language feature is the story of WWI poet Ellis Evans, known under the pen name Hedd Wyn. Ellis - who failed on his first attempt to fulfil his ambition of winning the Chair at the National Eisteddfod - left school at 14 and three years later was conscripted (in place of his brother) into the Army. While serving in France, he used every spare moment to work on his poem 'Yr Arwr' (The Hero), which he finally completed and submitted by post. A month later, on the first day of the Battle of Passchendaele, he was mortally wounded, but his poem survived and he was awarded the prize he had always coveted. Little noted in England, Hedd Wyn received an Oscar nomination in 1994 for best foreign-language film.Author: NF
