Lush but formulaic Fox musical, set on the Barbary Coast during the Naughty Nineties and charting the constancy of Faye's broken heart as she quietly rises to fame as a singing star while Payne, brashly acquiring ideas above his station, gets into entrepreneurial messes and tags after a Nob Hill heiress. Notable mainly for the vivid Technicolor and Faye's rendition of the Oscar-winning song 'You'll Never Know' (although it's repeated once too often as she waits for Payne to get the message).Author: GA
