Hindered (1974)
Director: Stephen Dwoskin
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Certainly one of Dwoskin's most immediately accessible movies, Hindered is also one of his most rigorous examinations of the 'look' of the spectator, of the camera, and of his actors. Made in cooperation with German TV, the film traces the ebbing and flowing relationship between Dwoskin - a polio victim who can only move, and then with great difficulty, with the use of crutches - and Carola Regnier. In contrast to most of Dwoskin's works, the content of Hindered is not overtly erotic. Nonetheless, like films such as Dyn Amo and Girl, it works by denying the spectator full satisfaction of the voyeuristic interests raised by the film's images. Dwoskin forces the spectator to take sides with the trapped actors - including Dwoskin himself, of course - whom his camera mercilessly probes.Author: PH
