This comedy thriller has Arquette, the 'Marilyn Monroe' of her local Midwestern State Fair, hot-footing it with amour Donovan to a Hutterite colony on the Alberta plains, there to hide from the FBI following a cash robbery. Donovan is only cautiously welcomed back from the land of temptation by elder Mueller-Stahl; but when he's seen off in a car accident, Hutterite law demands that Arquette must marry his 12-year-old brother. The elders hope the law will provoke her swift egress. Instead, she accepts. Matching the culture clash of Witness with a rock'n'roll movie would be daunting for even the most inventive director. Leonard Nimoy plays it straight. Arquette is a vital, kooky presence, but here she looks merely embarrassed.Author: WH
