Hoover Street Revival (2002)
Director: Sophie Fiennes
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
At once fascinating and frustrating, Fiennes' digitally shot documentary look at South LA's Greater Bethany Church impresses for the scenes of the wonderful gospel choir in full voice, and for the charismatic 'Bishop' Noel Jones spouting his enormously popular, influential and nonsensical gobbledegook. Also of interest are the glimpses of the business Jones has built up around him, and the testimonies of those who claim he saved them from sin. But there are slightly too many choir scenes. Also, it'd be nice to have more analysis, and proper access to Jones, whom we almost never see away from the pulpit.Author: GA
