Hotel de Love (1996)
Director: Craig Rosenberg
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A gaudy, kitsch, neo-romantic Australian comedy, in which, by some oversight, there are no ABBA tunes, but 10CC serve almost as well. Twins Rick (Young) and Stephen (Bossell) both carry a ten-year torch for Melissa (Burrows), an old flame from their teens. Rick is cynical and assertive, Simon shy and romantic. Melissa re-enters their lives at the titular honeymoon hotel, arm in arm with her fiancé, the very week that the twins' bickering parents are to renew their wedding vows. With its dapper cocktail piano player, theme suites, and 'Niagara Smalls' water feature, the de Love is quite tacky enough to complement a handful of enjoyably broad performances, but writer/director Rosenberg doesn't allow the dressing to swamp the salad - yes, it's occasionally crass, but it's also sometimes laugh-out-loud funny.Author: TCh
