The Man in the Iron Mask (1939)
Director: James Whale
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A stylish swashbuckler from the flamboyant James Whale, with Louis Hayward sharply distinguishing his twin roles, the tyrannical Louis XIV and his identical 'lost' brother. Warren William lends fine support as the fourth musketeer, D'Artagnan, and the film has a fine romantic arc to it, although it hasn't the bizarre wit of the director's most memorable pictures (except perhaps in the bizarre comeuppance that awaits the bad twin when he has to don the iron mask in his turn, and imagines himself strangling to death on his own ever-growing whiskers).Author: TCh
