A Midsummer Night's Dream (1984)
Director: Celestino Coronado
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This axes at least 75 per cent of Shakespeare's text and lets the images and score do the talking. It derives from a Kemp stage production, but is never stagy in the bad sense: its origins simply enhance the overall texture of the artifice, making it like a Richard Dadd painting come to life. Modest liberties are taken with the plot, so that the feuding couples switch sexual proclivities as well as partners, but it's surprisingly faithful to the spirit of the play, through lustrous photography and a memorably refined performance from Jack 'Orlando' Birkett as Titania.Author: TR
