Muriel's Wedding (1994)
Director: PJ Hogan
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Rather too obviously aimed at the Strictly Ballroom feel-good market, this is nevertheless an engaging, funny and sometimes surprisingly tough romantic comedy about one Muriel Hislop, an unsophisticated plain Jane (Collette), who'll do anything - including lie - to leave her dull hometown of Porpoise Spit in pursuit of dreams fuelled by ABBA songs. It could do with a little more irony, not to say originality, but the perkiness of the script, production design and performances (notably Griffiths as Muriel's pal) carry it through with flying, gaudy colours.Author: GA
