When Julianne (Roberts) hears that her best friend Michael (Mulroney) is getting married - this weekend! - she's horrified. The bride, Kimmy (Diaz), is beautiful, wealthy, smart, tasteful and sensitive. Obviously she'll have to go. Installed as maid of honour, Julianne has four days to win back her man and prevent the marriage. In Muriel's Wedding, director Hogan orchestrated sympathy for a perennial underdog obsessed with marriage; here, we're meant to empathise with a Machiavellian anti-hero - as Julianne humiliates her rival at a karaoke club, re-routes the honeymoon, and generally comes on like Glenn Close in Fatal Attraction. Roberts' fragile charm keeps it going for longer than you might imagine, but Mr Mulroney's magnetism must be taken entirely on faith, and the film's brazen amorality gradually freezes the smile on your face. Whenever invention fails, Hogan resorts to forced pratfalls, songs or camp farce - Everett easily steals the show as Julianne's gay colleague.Author: TCh
