My Brilliant Career (1979)
Director: Gillian Armstrong
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Overrated though attractive slice of nostalgia, based on a novel published in 1901 about a girl from a poor farming family, stuck in the outback and undecided between expectations that she will marry a local landowner and her own resolve to become a writer. The period atmosphere is evoked with careful delicacy, but the characters rarely become more than stereotypes with performances (Judy Davis excepted) to match.Author: TM
