Despite putting us on 'contemporary relevance' alert by having a Roman centurion brandish a cigarette lighter, d'Anna interests himself more in the peculiarities and particularities of King Herod's power games than in any abiding relevance they might hold. It amounts to a not unenjoyable shambles, with a pick 'n' mix cast, layers of diverse source material (Oscar Wilde, Richard Strauss, the Bible), plus softcore trimmings. Champa's nymphet Salomé is eclipsed by the mature sexuality of Pamela Salem (Herodias) - though that, like everything else in the picture, will be a matter of taste and temperament.Author: BBa
