Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

This, er, unorthodox account of the 1615 siege of Osaka Castle is a batty mix of cartoon historiography (characters representing real life figures are captioned on first appearance), political satire (the whole thing is a commentary on the fate of the early 1960s student movement) and psychedelic visual effects (the laddish protagonists are guided by the ninja Sasuke, whose exposure as an infant to a glowing blue meteorite gave him supernatural powers). Toei almost fired Kato for making it, but it's become a minor cult favourite in Japan. Very much of its time, it holds up as a rueful, dreamlike account of the shortcomings of revolutionary idealism.
