Ford plays gruff, cranky Quinn Harris, a drunken single-prop pilot out in the South Pacific, the only available provider of transport for sun-seeking Manhattan editor Robin Monroe (Heche) and her fiancé Frank (Schwimmer). When Robin and Quinn crash-land on a deserted tropical island well off the designated flight path, their respective partners organise forlorn search parties, get drunk and 'share their pain'. Having gone to such lengths to get his mismatched antagonists stranded in the middle of nowhere, screenwriter Michael Browning is soon at a loss what to do with them - hence the desperate intervention of bloodthirsty pirates intent on souping up the suspense. But the film has its fair share of laughs, whether it's Heche in stitches as the plane goes down (she's taken a month's supply of stress pills), or Schwimmer backing into bed with Ford's voluptuous island squeeze (Obradors). Despite the playfully acknowledged age difference, Ford and Heche make a fun, sexy couple - his comic talents have always been undervalued, and she's all out to impress, so you'll probably forgive the movie its banality and somewhat old-fashioned sexual politics.Author: TCh
