Movie review

From Time Out Film Guide

A comedy for the AIDS era, Ephron's movie puts a continent between the lovebirds. Sex doesn't come much safer than this. Mourning his beloved wife, widower Sam Baldwin (Hanks) moves to Seattle with his young son. When the boy arranges for dad to discuss his pain on air with a radio shrink, journalist Annie Reed (Ryan) is just one of thousands of women to fall in love at first sob with 'Sleepless in Seattle'. Unfortunately, she's 3,000 miles away and otherwise engaged to dull, dependable Walter (Pullman). This variation of the 'him and hers' schtick Ephron first tapped in her screenplay for When Harry Met Sally comes complete with another of Ryan's ditzy romantics and a fine cameo from Harry director Rob Reiner. The picture is both old fashioned and very knowing, and occasionally tart. As Annie's friend Becky (O'Donnell) recognises, it's about 'movie love' - the love that will not be denied. The schmaltzy soundtrack is overdone, but cameraman Sven Nykvist wraps it all up in an appropriately warm glow.
