Predictably, with four of the horror genre's most sinister presences in the cast, this is highly entertaining; but Rowland Lee (who made the wonderful Zoo in Budapest) creates a sumptuous, atmospheric tale worthy of following Whale's originals. The set, shot in a style reminiscent of the German Expressionist classics, is superb - a labyrinthine castle of gloomy shadows - and there are enough strong moments, as when the monster (Karloff, far less sympathetic than in his previous incarnations) tears off policeman Atwill's artificial arm, to make the film memorable in its own right.Author: GA
