Le Soupirant (1962)
Director: Pierre Etaix
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Etaix's first feature after serving as assistant to Jacques Tati. Though his penchant for obtrusive sound effects (mostly creaks and squeaks) at the expense of dialogue makes this uncomfortably reminiscent of a silent classic revamped by Robert Youngson, and though his approach to humour can on occasion be as laboured as his protagonist's endeavours to acquire a wife, the comic temperament is real enough, and the gags are often brilliant.Author: GAd
