Speak Like a Child (1998)
Director: John Akomfrah
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
After some years apart, Billy reunites with pregnant girlfriend Ruby and their old school ally Sammy, and drives them to their now abandoned school, a children's home on the Northumberland coast. Here, Billy hopes to resurrect the unconventional family unit he presided over as a boy (cue interminable flashback). A thin script gets strained, pretentious treatment from a director who's evidently more interested in emblems than characters. Ropey performances, self-consciously arty compositions and undistinguished camerawork.Author: TCh
