Though the original Virgin Soldiers was no masterpiece, it certainly never deserved the retrospective slur of association with this appalling sequel, upping the nudge-nudge quotient with Leslie Thomas' apparent complicity, and all too easily characterised as Confessions of a National Serviceman.
