Lavish but lifeless adaptation of Hemingway's novel about the 'lost generation' of expatriates who hung out in Paris after WWI. King's plodding direction and the miscasting of Power as the impotent, thrill-seeking hero are major handicaps. Singer/actress Greco's sympathetic prostitute is a scene-stealer, Gardner is stunning as the lubricious aristo whom Power falls for, and Flynn - in his penultimate screen role - is delightfully self-mocking. Even so, only the occasional sequence, such as the running of the bulls at Pamplona, achieves any real excitement.Author: NF

- Posted on Jan 09 2008 03:01 Cerebral, vastly under rated, highly intelligent early 20th century melodrama spouting truth and wisdom of social misfits, needs viewers to turn on in their brain cells and listen and learn from Hemingway's existential prose to fully absorb it's meaning. A sad tale of doom and destiny, masquerading as Hollywood gloss.
