In a Savage Land (1999)
Director: Bill Bennett
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This is a drama with massive travelogue potential. On the Trobriand Islands north of Australia, an anthropologist couple (Donovan and Stange) embark on a year-long study of the 'natives' as war is declared in 1939. Sewell is the more pragmatic American pearl trader who stays to comfort Strange when her husband dies of dysentery. Bennett has a dour way with social observation and romantic storytelling - though the script involves some interesting conflicts - and the ending is unsatisfactory.Author: WH
