In Nowhere Land (2001)
Director: Tayfun Pirselimoglu
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A commemoration of Turkey's 'disappeared', and the lost souls they leave behind. Mrs Sükran doesn't know what's become of her son Veysel, who may have followed the footsteps of his father, a political activist abducted by the police. Veysel's girlfriend has identified a bruised body in the morgue - but hope springs eternal, and when Mrs Sükran hears that Veysel has escaped to Mardin, near the Syrian border, she leaves her job and boards the cross-country night train. The film maintains an agreeable simplicity in terms of rhythms and images, empathising with a protagonist in evident denial, without feeling the need to inflate the dramatic stakes to provide false answers. The English subtitling is occasionally clumsy, but this is a sympathetic and modestly effective work.Author: NB
