JB Priestley's play comes to the screen (adapted by Desmond Davis) with a minimum of cinematic imagination. Alastair Sim is still highly watchable, however, as the Yorkshire policeman who materialises in the midst of a comfortably off Edwardian family to reveal how each one of its complacent members bears some responsibility in the suicide of a pregnant pauper.
