Spruced up in preparation for a fortieth- anniversary DVD release, Lionel Jeffries’s 1970 adaptation of Edith Nesbit’s homely children’s novel still basks in a warm, rosy glow of universal nicety. Set in the early 1900s, the story – about three well-bred kids (Jenny Agutter, Gary F Warren and the excellent Sally Thomsett) having to leave their plush London home when Father is jailed for selling state secrets – is a celebration of old-fashioned British fortitude set in an environment of steam engines, buttercups, top hats and smocks. They then spend their days by the railway, waving at passengers, preventing disasters and hanging out with Bernard Cribbins’s waggish station master. Putting aside its fusty look and feel, Jeffries’s film remains an enjoyable evocation of the time. Of course, whether today’s kids get it is open to debate.Author: Derek Adams

- Posted on Apr 02 2010 15:08 The cleaned up digital print is beautiful - never seen the film looking so lovely. Shame there were only 3 people in the cinema this lunchtime. It's a gorgeous film, and the ending still brings tears to the eyes. Fab.

i saw this film the day it was released on an unsuspecting world.i fell in love ( and still am ) with jennt agutter who to this day i find so perfect. The film to me is timeless..very well played by all..i mean.. who would have thought Birnard Cribbins as a station master
to the special effects team.. you are not given the credit you desearve.. thats land-slide for instance..i saw one for real..and you cant tell the real from the made up
so overall.. this is a films for the young..your age matters not..Mark - Report as inappropriate
