Reggae Sunsplash II (1979)
Director: Stefan Paul
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A travel-fodder tableau of young lovers silhouetted against a Caribbean beach, with an accompaniment of 10cc's Dreadlock Holiday, strikes the first discordant note. Nearly two hours and much well-intentioned but naive politicising later, all credibility is gone. The film chronicles the Reggae Sunsplash II festival at Montego Bay, with the proceedings interrupted by apparently random interviews with Rastafarians and by unguarded shots of locals where the prying camera produces a distinctly uncomfortable air. Unfortunately there is little here for the reggae connoisseur: a passable performance from Marley; some flaccid disco from Third World; and probably the best of the bunch, silken vocals from one of reggae's gentlemen, Winston Rodney (Burning Spear).Author: LW
