The Return (1988)
Director: Phil Mulloy
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
First feature in ages (since Give Us This Day in 1982, in fact) from one of Britain's most talented independent film-makers: a powerful, claustrophobic drama that uncovers Oedipal passions in the mind of a desperate Irishman facing eviction from his docklands slum. Literate writing and magnificent performances wring maximum intensity from a plot sprung on flashbacks and fantasies. It sounds like the usual social-realist guff, but it plays more like a Borges condundrum.Author: TR
