Ring 2 (1999)
Director: Hideo Nakata
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Rare case of a sequel living up to (and in some ways even improving on) the original. The quest for answers about the killer videotape - now understood to be a kind of psychic virus - is taken up by Ryuji's girlfriend Mai (Nakatani), a marginal character in the original Ring. There are more grisly revelations about Sadako (including a hint that her father was Not Of This Earth), more dodgy brain chemistry and a doomed scientific attempt to channel the destructive energy into a pool of water. Unlike equivalent American movies, this feels no need to provide a redemptive ending: the threat appears unstoppable, and the isolation cell awaits.Author: TR
