Romance on the High Seas (1948)
Director: Michael Curtiz
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A bland but amiable musical marking Doris Day's debut. With vague jealousies in the air, millionaire DeFore hires a private eye (Carson) to check up on his wife (Paige) while she is on a cruise to Rio. But Paige, with her own checking up in mind, hires an aspiring singer (Day) with a yen for luxurious travel to take her place. Carson and Day promptly fall in love during the cruise, and much confusion ensues when Carson guiltily confesses in his report to her supposed husband, while Day can't resist a career-enhancing chance to sing under her assumed name at a society charity do in Rio. Likeable performances (backed by a sterling supporting cast), plus good Jule Styne-Sammy Cahn songs, make it all pleasantly painless.Author: TM
