Romance with a Double Bass (1974)
Director: Robert Young
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
An adaptation of a Chekhov short story, set in Russia, with Cleese as a doleful double-bass player booked to perform for the forced engagement of Princess Constanza (Booth). To pass time before rehearsals, he strips off for a quick dip in a nearby river, whereupon someone steals his clothes. Meanwhile, downstream, the same fate has befallen the Princess. This leads to a very funny, innocent and tastefully filmed nudist romp in which the two of them (without peeking) try to work their way back to the huge mansion, the Princess squeezed into his double-bass case. One classic moment has Cleese running back and forth across the picturesque countryside, dropping the case and having to sprint back to pick up his double-bass.Author: DA
