With Duel in the Sun, the most primitive and hysterical of Vidor's films, Ruby Gentry is a Southern family drama set in motion by the love of a girl from the wrong side of the tracks (Jones) for a member of the local gentry (Heston). An explicitly sensual film - notably in the ride along the beach and in the final sequences - it draws much of its force from Vidor's consistent identification of the viewer with Ruby as she struggles to come to terms with each situation her high-powered emotions place her in. Not entirely successful, but well worth seeing.Author: PH
