Jazz on a Summer's Day (1959)
Director: Bert Stern
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This documentary record of the 1958 Newport Jazz Festival is often hailed as one of the first and most influential live concert films, paving the way for later classics like Monterey Pop and Woodstock. A dazzling array of jazz and rock'n'roll giants are captured on celluloid, including Chuck Berry duck-walking his way through 'Sweet Little Sixteen'. Unquestionable highlight, however, is the extraordinary Mahalia Jackson, whose soulful renditions of 'Didn't It Rain', 'Shout All Over' and 'The Lord's Prayer' send a shiver down the spine.Author: NF
