From Time Out Film Guide

In this live-action adventure, Mowgli (Scott Lee) is five before he's jungle-bred. The animals act like animals, sort of, which means that Mowgli wrestles with Baloo the bear, tumbles with wolves, but doesn't discuss philosophy with 'em. He swims in sun-shafted rivers like Johnny Weissmuller and runs like the wind. Re-entering society in proud manhood, this beautiful, innocent wild child stuns Kitty Brydon (Headey), daughter of the local divisional officer (Neill, stiff but decent), much to the consternation of a pack of snivelling subalterns led by bad-egg Elwes. Sensing that romance and animal magic won't sew up the audience, director Sommers hots up the pace with abductions and a treasure hunt in the Lost City; this seems like a loss of nerve. But Scott Lee is an unexpectedly appealing hero, partly because he's never indulged, and his dialogue is kept to a minimum.
