Attempting to blend the sombre themes of Raven's End with the (superficial) lyricism of Elvira Madigan, Widerberg fails, in his depiction of a protracted strike at a paper mill in Sweden in 1931, to convey either the political context behind the strike or the developing political consciousness of the strikers.
