Against All Odds (1984)
Director: Taylor Hackford
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This places itself in much the same category as Jim McBride's Breathless - a glossy remake of an old and much loved classic, in this case Jacques Tourneur's 1947 noir thriller Out of the Past - and once again it is best to forget the original. Bridges is a fading football star with an iffy shoulder and friends in low places. When one of them, the owner of an iniquitous night club (Woods), sends him off to Mexico to recover an errant girlfriend, the problem of finding her, and the problem of the small murder she commits, pale beside the problem of coming back to admit they've fallen in love. There are longueurs; there are also compensations, however: pointed performances from Woods and Greer, passion on a Mexican beach, and as in Breathless, LA never looked so beautiful.
